Wells Fargo Regional Foundation awards Salem Main St. grant to “revitalize” Center of Salem

The Wells Fargo Regional Foundation has awarded the Stand Up for Salem, Salem Main Street Program with the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation Neighborhood Implementation Grant to comprehensively address the revitalization needs of the Center of Salem Neighborhood in Salem City, New Jersey.

With this grant from the Foundation, the Salem Main Street Program will focus on the Economic Development goals of the Oak-to-Olive Neighborhood Revitalization Plan which was developed in 2010.

“We are very excited to support this initiative.” Said Lois Greco, SVP and Evaluation Officer of the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation. “Stand Up for Salem has been dedicated to strengthening the City of Salem and they are the right partner to lead the residents and stakeholders of this community.”

The grant will be distributed over the next five years and will allow the Salem Main Street Program to coordinate business support and expansion activities with the business community and the City. Projects include developing an inventory of available commercial properties and working with owners to make them retail ready, business development training, increased community outreach and youth programming.

Chris Davenport, Executive Director of Stand Up For Salem, speaking for the organization said, “We are tremendously grateful and very much looking forward to working in partnership with the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation to help improve opportunities for jobs, youth activities and business in the Salem Community.”

Since 1999, Stand Up For Salem (SUFS) has led the initiation of the Salem Main Street Program. The Stand Up For Salem/Salem Main Street Program is volunteer based, being modeled after the national Main Street approach to downtown revitalizations. Hundreds of volunteers who care about Salem’s future have, ultimately, resulted in a fully accredited program which has been recognized as one of the top rated New Jersey Main Street Programs and has helped with economic growth initiatives and impacted real estate value in downtown Salem City.

Established in 1998, the Wells Fargo Regional Foundation is an independent grant-making body with the goal of supporting the revitalization of low-income communities located in New Jersey, Delaware, and eastern Pennsylvania. The Foundation is focused on comprehensive community and economic development initiatives at the neighborhood level. Through this approach, the Foundation’s grants support the creation and implementation of resident-driven neighborhood plans.
